Most men do not realize that as they age their prostate will cause them problems. The three main problems are infection (prostatitis), enlargement (benign prostate hypertrophy or BPH) or cancer.

It is a well-known fact that by the age of 50, three-out-of-four-men already have an enlarged prostate - benign prostate hypertrophy or BPH.

The symptoms are pretty obvious and they cannot be missed: trouble urinating, inability to empty the bladder completely, pain associated with urinating and especially the need to go to the bathroom several times in the middle of the night. These are classic symtoms of prostate problems.

What is Benign Prostate Hypertrophy?

The prostate is a walnut-size gland that surrounds the urine tube (urethra) in men. When this gland swells as you age, it will cause severe urinary problems.

It is commonly understood that the prostate gland grows during most of a man's life but the enlargement doesn't create problems until late in life.

It is suggested that one cause of benign prostate hypertrophy is related to the decrease of testosterone as man ages thus leaving a higher proportion of estrogen - a female hormone. Estrogen may increase a substance that promotes cell growth.

On the other hand, it is also suggested that another cause of benign prostate hypertropy is dihydrotestosterone (DHT) - a substance derived from testosterone in the prostate which may help control its growth. Testosterone decreases as a man ages but he may continue to produce high levels of dihydrotestosterone which may encourage the growth of cells.

Regardless of the symtoms and causes of benign prostate hypertrophy, an enlarged prostate is an annoying problem that requires understanding and treatment in order to relieve the symtoms and restore well-being and good health.
