Inskip Point

Inskip Point is located on the opposite side of the southern point of World Heritage Listed Fraser Island. The Pacific Ocean is on the eastern side and the Great Sandy Strait is on the western side. Inskip Point Camping Grounds are a nature-based recreational area.

There are numerous spots for camping on Inskip Point. However, the camping areas are divided into four spots. MV Sarawak is on the far end of Inskip Point. This spot is open camping with limited 2WD access. 4WD is recommended. Sites for small caravans and camper trailers are restricted. SS Dorrigo is the first camping area when entering Inskip Point. It is an open camping spot with limited 2WD access. 4WD is recommended. In between these two areas, you will find MV Natone and MV Beagle. These areas are open camping spots with only 4WD access. All these camping areas are occupied on "first in, best placed" basis. You cannot reserve spots by roping off areas.

Inskip Point Camping Grounds are nature-based recreational areas. To maintain these camping spots, the camper needs to comply with certain rules. These rules involve no camping on the fore dunes, no littering (you will find that rubbish bins are provided at most of the camping areas), no emptying of content of portable loos, no tying ropes to the surrounding trees (it is essential that you use sand pegs at all times when securing your tents) and you will need to secure your dog or dogs. In other words, don't let your dog roam. Your dog needs to be on a leash.

Looking after the camping areas on Inskip Point is in the best interest of all campers. In fact, you should make it a priority to minimise the disturbance of this fragile area and its wildlife. In doing so, you will preserve this beautiful part of the world for years to come so that campers can continue to enjoy this spot.

Camping at Inskip Point will require you to bring some essentials so that you can enjoy your experience. You will need to bring some freshwater. Freshwater is available from Clarkson Drive. Just bring some containers. Fuel stoves are preferred to open fires because of their environmentally friendly nature. Open camp fires are often part of camping. You will need to bring your own milled timber. Make sure that open fire are permitted before you camp at Inskip Point.

The recreational area at Inskip Point is suitable for small caravans and camper trailers. As you drive toward the end of the Inskip Point Peninsula, you will notice caravan and camp trailer sites on both sides of the road. There is no power on Inskip Point so you will need to bring a generator if you want to enjoy the comforts of home. The generator must be a small low dB generator up to 2.0 Kva. While camping on Inskip Point, it is important to be noise conscious. Generators need to be turned off by 9:00pm.

To camp at Inskip Point, you will need to collect permits before you arrived so that you can display the permit tag at your camping site. There are several ways to book your camp site. You can book online or by phone (13 74 68) or you can get the permits over the counter at several outlets in Rainbow Beach. For instance, you can get a permit over the counter at Shell Service Station, 36 Rainbow Beach Road (between 6am and 6pm) or you can get the permit over the counter at Rainbow Beach Tourist Information Center, 8 Rainbow Beach Road (between 7am and 5.30pm). Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services has an office in Rainbow Beach on Rainbow Beach Road and it is open weekdays between 8:00am and 5:30pm. Another place is Manta Ray Barges, 66 Rainbow Beach Road. They are open between 6:00am and 4:00pm.
