How to Write a Topical Sermon Outline

Writing a topical sermon outline is a science and an art.

1. The Science of Writing a Topical Sermon Outline.

Topical Sermon Outline

There are four concepts you must keep in mind when you are writing a sermon.

  • Every sermon has three parts - an introduction, the body and the conclusion.
  • The body of the sermon is the sermon outline.
  • The sermon outline has a main preaching point, sub-points and incidental points.
  • The main preaching point is linked to the sub-points and incidental points with a HINGE word. The HINGE word is always a plural noun.

I have written a 12 page article on the science of writing a sermon and a sermon outline. To download the article, click on How to Write a Sermon With Ease.

2. The Art of Writing a Topical Sermon Outline

The art of writing topical sermon outlines comes with experience. When I first starting writing sermons, I found it very time consuming. In fact, writing two sermons every week seeemed to take up most of my time in the ministry.

However, once I developed the science of writing sermons (see my article above - How to Write a Sermon With Ease), I found sermon writing a lot easier. In fact, I enjoyed writing sermons and sermon outlines.

3. How to Write a Topical Sermon Outline

I was asked to speak at the commencement service of a Christian School. I knew that the only way that I could fulfil this assignment was by writing a topical message.

The Christian school had adopted Hebrews 10:24-25 as it theme for the school year. So my topic was easy - Encouraging One Another in the School Community.

When you write a topical sermon outline, your first priority is choosing your topic or main preaching point.

Once you have chosen your topic or main preaching point, you need to decide what you are going to say about your topic or main preaching point.

I decided to talk about how students, teachers and parents could encourage one another during the school year.

To decide what you are going to say about your topic or main preaching point, you ask yourself the how, why, when, where or what of the topic. This will give you the sub-points for your sermon outline. There is a real art to this. The longer you do this, the more you will enjoy it. In fact, it becomes a real pleasure to see how God brings your topical sermon outline together.

My topical sermon for the commencement service was starting to take shape.

Encouraging One Another in the School Community.

  • Choose your words wisely
  • Choose your responses prayerfully
  • Choose kindness every time

Being a fifteen minute speech, I decided to have sub-points only. However, I still needed to link the topic or main preaching point with the sub-points so that there would be sequence and flow to the message.

Early in my pastoral ministry I developed what I call the HINGE word. The HINGE word links the topic of the sermon with the sub-points. The HINGE word must be a plural noun. When I developed this HINGE word approach, I found my sermons had sequence and flow. The congregation could understand what I was talking about and what I was saying about what I was talking about (Now that's mouth full).

To put it simply, the congregation knew the main preaching point and subsequent sub-points. In other words, the sermon had sequence and flow.

For the commencement speech, I decided on the HINGE word - principles.

There are three principles that will help you encourage people in the school community. They are:

  1. Choose your words wisely (Proverbs 12:18)
  2. Choose your responses prayerfully (Proverbs 15:1a; 18b).
  3. Choose kindness every time (Ephesians 4:32)
