What is Believers Baptism

With many different forms of baptisms promoted within the Christian church, there is a need to understand what is believer's baptism.

Believer's Baptism can be explained in two active words - believe and be baptized.

Believer's Baptism is sequential. First, you believe then you are baptized.

You will find this sequential order in the conversion of the many on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38; 2:41), the many in Samaria (Acts 8:12), the many in Corinth (Acts 18:8), the conversion of Ethiopian (Acts 8:35-38), Cornelius (Acts 10:44-48), Lydia (Acts 16:14-15) and Crispus (Acts 18:8).

Believer's Baptism by Immersion

Is believer's baptism by immersion or some other form?

It seems believer's baptism is better explained by immersion.

When the believer goes down under the water, the believer is publicly renouncing the sinful core of his being (Romans 6:11).

When the believer comes up out of the water, the believer acknowledges the new life he has in Christ (Romans 6:4).

Believer's Baptism by immersion is the outward sign of the inward experience. See diagram above!

Furthermore, the English word baptism comes from the Greek word baptizo which implies "to dip under" or "immerse".

Also, the Early Church practiced believer's baptism by immersion. Jesus' baptism implies immersion. See Mark 1:8-9. The many who were baptized in John 3:23 and also the many in Acts 8:38.

Why is Believer's Baptism Necessary

First and more most, it is commanded by Jesus. Jesus said to His disciples, "Go...make disciples (believers)...baptizing them" (Matthew 28:18-20).

Second, it demonstrates our love and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 5:3).
