What is Spiritual Warfare?

What is Spiritual Warfare? Spiritual warfare is the battle that every person faces when he or she becomes a Christian.

What is Spiritual Warfare?

A reporter once interviewed a man on his 100th birthday. “What are you most proud of?” asked the reporter. Thinking for a while the man said, “I don’t have an enemy in the world.” “What a beautiful thought! How inspirational! Tell me,” asked the reporter, “how have you achieved such a feat?” With a casual tone, the man said, “To be honest, I outlived every last one of them.”

What a jovial thought!

But in reality, that’s all it is...a jovial thought!

While we live on this earth, every Christian has a common enemy.

The apostle Peter calls him ‘our adversary the devil’ (1 Peter 5:8).

The apostle Paul calls him ‘the prince of the power of the air’ (Ephesians 2:2).

Jesus called him ‘the Father of lies’ (John 8:44).

If you are a Christian, then you have an enemy. And he opposes you. He opposes your Christian walk, your Christian testimony and your Christian witness.

Of course, he does this through deception and lies.

Therefore, the apostle Paul said, “Take up and put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes (lies/deceptions) of the devil, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day” (Ephesians 6:11, 13).

Notice, we battle the enemy with the armor of God. God has provided all the armor we need to deflect Satan’s lies and deceptions.

Notice also, it is a spiritual battle. Look at the beginning of verse 12, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood.” Why? It is a spiritual battle and that’s why we need God’s armor. We cannot stand against the lies and deceptions of the devil in our own strength and wisdom.

Let me make two observations about our enemy and armor of God!

First, Satan is a defeated foe. Christ defeated Satan at the cross (John 12:31-33). We are not called to defeat Satan. We have simply been commanded to stand against the schemes of Satan (Eph 6:11).

Second, the armor of God is primarily defensive. We are not called to attack the devil. We have been commanded to stand against the lies and deceptions of the devil.

What is Spiritual Warfare armor?

  1. Truth (Ephesians 6:14a)
  2. Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14b)
  3. Stedfastness (Ephesians 6:15)
  4. Faith (Ephesians 6:16)
  5. Confidence (Ephesians 6:17a)
  6. Scripture (Ephesians 6:17b)
  7. Prayer (Ephesians 6:18)
